Ask us before the first shipment

These fruits are allowed into Australia, but Vietnam ships them there in smaller volumes, or each lot needs an irradiation slot, an import permit or a full inspection on arrival. We confirm supply and the current requirements with you before the first lot.

What Australia requires

  • Only fruits with BICON import conditions for Vietnam can enter. A fruit or vegetable without import conditions in DAFF's Biosecurity Import Conditions system (BICON) cannot be imported. From Vietnam these are today dragon fruit, mango, longan, lychee and passion fruit, and fresh coconut, which Australia admits from all countries under one BICON case. Every consignment needs a phytosanitary certificate from Vietnam's plant protection authority and is inspected on arrival in Australia.
  • Dragon fruit: vapour heat treatment before shipment at a facility approved by Australia and Vietnam, for 40 minutes at a pulp temperature of 46.5 °C or more with relative humidity of 90 % or more, plus a pre-export inspection for mealybugs. BICON covers Hylocereus species, so both white and red dragon fruit. The importer holds a BICON import permit.
  • Mango, longan and lychee: irradiation in Vietnam at an approved facility, at a minimum dose of 400 Gy for mango and lychee; for longan, BICON sets 150 Gy against fruit flies and 400 Gy against mealybugs and litchi fruit borer. The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code allows at most 1 kGy. Mango comes from registered orchards and packhouses. The phytosanitary certificate states the dose, the treatment facility and the treatment date, and cartons are insect-proof.
  • Passion fruit: import conditions for fresh passion fruit from Vietnam were published on BICON on 20 September 2024. The fruit is irradiated in Vietnam at an approved facility, and a valid import permit is issued to the importer before the fruit is shipped.
  • Coconut: fresh coconut needs no import permit, but it must be free from excess stalk, trash, shoots and sprouts, inspected before export, certified and securely packed. Whole coconuts with the husk on must be fumigated; mature coconuts with the husk removed and immature (young) coconuts are exempt from mandatory fumigation. Mature coconuts are fully unpacked on arrival so that a sample of 600 coconuts can be inspected.
  • Western Australia has extra quarantine pests on some pathways, for example Pacific mealybug on dragon fruit; please tell us if the fruit is for Western Australia.
  • Imported Food Inspection Scheme: once biosecurity conditions are met, imported food must be safe and comply with the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. Fresh fruit is referred for inspection and a residue test at a rate of 5 % of consignments; after a failed test, later consignments are referred at 100 % until a history of compliance is established. Residue test reports are available on request.
  • Country of origin labelling: fresh fruit sold at retail in Australia, packaged or loose, carries a country of origin label, such as "Product of Vietnam"; loose fruit can be labelled on a sign next to it. Carton text is agreed in the sales contract.
  • Free trade agreements: Vietnam and Australia are both parties to AANZFTA, CPTPP and RCEP. Under AANZFTA and RCEP the preference is supported by a proof of origin, such as a certificate of origin; under CPTPP the certification of origin has no set form but must contain the minimum data. Please confirm duty and taxes with your customs broker.
  • Commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading or air waybill are sent in advance as scans.

Fruit not yet on our Australia list

Vietnamese lychee is allowed into Australia under the same irradiation rules, but it is not on our list yet: ask us and we will check supply before the first shipment. Fresh pomelo from Vietnam, including our green-skin pomelo, was opened in April 2026, but Australia suspended imports of fresh pomelo from Vietnam from 15 September 2026, for an initial period of six months; we will list it again once the suspension is lifted. Banana, jackfruit, rambutan, star apple, guava, seedless lime and watermelon from Vietnam are not among the fruits with Australian import conditions for Vietnam that we found, so we do not offer them for Australia.
