What the United States requires
- Only fruits that USDA APHIS authorises from Vietnam can enter. Today these are dragon fruit, rambutan, longan, lychee, star apple, mango and pomelo, all irradiated, and coconut with its husk removed as described below. The irradiated fruits are authorised for the continental United States; Hawaii and the US territories have their own rules. Every consignment is commercial and is inspected at the US port of entry.
- Irradiation in Vietnam at an APHIS-certified facility, under the APHIS and Vietnam work plan: a minimum dose of 400 Gy for dragon fruit, longan, lychee, rambutan, mango and star apple, and 150 Gy for pomelo. APHIS and Vietnam's Plant Protection Department inspect the fruit together before treatment.
- Registered orchards and packing houses: each carton shows the production unit code, the packing house code, the treatment facility code, the packing date and the lot number, with the words "Treated with radiation" and the radura symbol. Mango also needs registered places of production and a fungus control step.
- Not for Florida: longan and lychee cartons are stamped "Not for importation into or distribution in FL", and the fruit cannot be sold in Florida.
- Phytosanitary certificate for each irradiated lot, issued by Vietnam's Plant Protection Department, with the additional declarations APHIS requires for that fruit.
- Coconut: young coconut must have at least 75 % of the green outer husk removed; mature coconut with water inside must have the husk completely removed and must not have sprouted. No APHIS import permit or treatment is needed; coconuts are inspected at the US port of entry.
- FDA food facility registration: foreign facilities that pack or hold food for the US are registered with the FDA and name a US agent.
- FDA Prior Notice for every shipment, filed before arrival: at least 4 hours before arrival by air and 8 hours by sea.
- Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP): the US importer keeps an FSVP for each fruit and each foreign supplier, and gives a DUNS number at entry. We provide the documents the importer needs for supplier approval and verification.
- Country of origin: retailers must show where fresh fruit comes from, and suppliers pass that information along. Each carton is marked "Product of Vietnam". Carton text is agreed in the sales contract.
- Import duty: there is no free trade agreement between the United States and Vietnam. Please confirm the duty and any additional tariffs with your customs broker before ordering.
- Commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading or air waybill are sent in advance as scans.

Vietnamese lychee and star apple are authorised for the United States under the same irradiation rules, but they are not on our list yet: ask us and we will check supply before the first shipment. APHIS has opened a public comment period on fresh passion fruit from Vietnam; we will add it once imports are authorised. Vietnam has also asked the United States to open its market to seedless lime, guava and jackfruit, which are not authorised yet.
